One man obsessed with power.

One woman prepared to sacrifice everything to stop him.

One war that changed the world.

“World War Three lasted twelve days. Twelve days was all it took for mankind to devastate the planet and almost eradicate the human race. No victor emerged from the ashes and billions lost their lives.

We survivors lived through the bleakest of winters. A primal existence became the new order, and the little that remained of our humanity hung in the balance.

Then one man stood up and changed the world. I believed, as did everyone else, that he was the hero of our time, the man who had saved us from our own demise. His name is Eric Dane and he is the President of the New United States of America.

He is also my husband, and my greatest enemy.

I grew up oblivious to the truth, until my father found me when I was nineteen years old. He told me about the many horrifying facts that our new leader kept hidden from us. And he told me that beyond the borders the Resistance grew and fought for freedom from the oppression that Eric Dane had imposed on us.

My name is Rebecca Davis. I am twenty-six years old, and in me the Resistance has found the ultimate weapon.”

A narrative of good and evil, love and passion, right and wrong – and at the centre of the story a strong woman who is prepared to sacrifice everything for the cause she believes in.

The Legacy is an action-packed, adrenalin-inducing thrill ride which will leave you riveted long after you have turned the last page

THE LEGACY is a fun, fast paced post apocalyptic novel with plenty of action and interesting characters.

Focusing on the New United States that are slowly recovering after World War III devastated the planet in nuclear attacks, Rebecca Davis is chosen by the rebels to infiltrate the rule of Eric Dane, the charismatic leader who hides dark secrets behind his smiles and propaganda. Strategically placed, Rebecca quickly catches his eye and after a whirlwind romance she becomes his wife and First Lady. Using her position to gather intelligence for the rebellion, Rebecca plots to dismantle Eric’s despotic regime and save countless lives.

THE LEGACY is told in first person so we quickly get to know our MC and are thrust directly into the action from the beginning. Rebecca was a really interesting character and I admired her tenacity and willingness to risk everything to save the innocent people who are being punished by the harsh conditions set by the new leadership. Her interactions with Eric were compelling as Delport really ensured that the characters were fully realised and complex and so despite Eric’s failings as a leader, there was a chance to see beyond that to the man he was with Rebecca which was refreshing. There’s also an interesting sub-plot about the development of genetic engineering that fun to learn more about.

One of its biggest strengths and equally its weaknesses was the world-building. The book goes into great detail into World War III and its aftermath which was a pleasure to encounter considering one of my biggest complaints with dystopian or apocalyptic novels is the distinct lack of explanation however at times the world-building was tiresome and interfered with the pacing of the novel. Despite this I enjoyed the care the author took to explain Rebecca’s world.

There are hints of romance here and there but it plays a minor role in the plot which was slightly disappointing but if I’m brutally honest there really was none of the male characters that I was interested in shipping with Rebecca so it was a plus not to endure it.

Overall THE LEGACY is a strong introduction to the series setting up the story nicely with an OMG cliff-hanger that will leave you desperately wishing for book two immediately. Action packed with plenty of twists and turns, this is an easy read, perfect to engross yourself in one sitting.

An avid reader herself, Melissa finally decided to stop ‘watching from the sidelines’ and to do what is her passion.

“I was driving home from work when inspiration struck, and a storyline started unravelling in my head. For a few days it was all I could think about and eventually I realised that the only way to get it out of my head, was to put it all down on paper. I started writing, and that was that.”
