Nobody's perfect... or are they?
Abigail always knew that she was different, but what she didn't know was just how different.
That was until her 16th birthday, when her parent's revealed a devastating secret that confirmed her worst fears and changed her life forever.
Abigail is an Allelobrid: one of five children born as a result of their parents illegal science experiment in genetic engineering. The aim: to create a perfect human.
Yet perfection comes at a price.
Forced into a life on the run, Abigail finds love, danger and an organisation that will stop at nothing to get what they want.
When lives are at risk and freedom is threatened - could being perfect be enough to survive?
FREAKS is a fun, fast paced read packed full of action with entertaining characters and lots of twists and turns.
Abigail lives in London with her parents. All her life she has known that she was different, that she could do things easier than everyone else. Since she was a child she has been told never to make herself noticeable, never to raise people’s suspicions. At sixteen her parents finally admit the reason why…Abigail is one of five genetically engineered children who are super intelligent, strong and will outlive their peers by hundreds of years. Known as Allelobrids they were illegally created by their scientist parents who fled into hiding with them when the head of their lab wanted to kidnap the children and experiment on them for his own nefarious means. When one of the five is kidnapped, Abbie must find her other “Freaks” and come together to save his life.
I really liked Abbie as a character. Strong willed and intelligent, she was braver than she gave herself credit for. Intimidated by the other Allelobrids who were created to stand out, Abbie feels she is hopelessly average but instead it turns out to be one of her greatest strengths. She never hesitates to put the others first and risks her life to save the people who are finally her “own” after years of standing at the sidelines, looking in at life rather than living it. The other Allelobrids Max, Bradley, Amala and Violet were equally endearing and I liked the friendship they all formed.
The character of Dylan was another highlight for me, sweet and brave and I loved how his story unfolded.
I enjoyed the pacing of the novel which moved along steadily with bursts of action to get your pulse racing. Sometimes however there was a lot of explaining the past which did drag things down and too much telling rather than showing. I enjoyed the chemistry between Abbie and Max however towards the end I did feel that their relationship interfered with the plot and they were hand-holding and talking when they should have been running for their lives. There were many moments of real tension and a few moments that shocked me and were heartbreaking to read.
FREAKS was full of thrills and spills to keep me entertained, fun characters and a plot that kept me guessing throughout!
